We listened to the legend of the Indian Pipes (Monotropa uniflora), while standing in the very place where the proud Cherokee's had stood before. We identified the rare Green Striped Maple (Acer pensylvanicum) & the remnants of our magnificent American Chestnut Trees (Castanea dentata), My, oh my, how we could go on about the 'Greening Down' metamorphisms of the Wohlford Family.
The most important lesson we learned, however, was not a lesson of horticulture or nature itself. We learned about overcoming 'Life's bumps which are presented to all of us in the rich taperstry of life'. Our vacation has truly been life changing and we are forever grateful to our dear hosts who created this divine place.
Don't be afraid to venture outside of your comfort zone; there is much to learn about yourself and other members of your family. New skills............How to lay stone, how to hike mountains as a family group (5,342ft) exploring all God's wonderful nature, how to fish, get caught up on a rock, and still have a beautiful fish to show for it, how to celebrate my achievement by tripping over the rock firepit and falling on an opened tackle box and finally how to cross-over with my family to a more understanding and tranquil dimension, God Bless and thank you Aquone Cabins...........Melanie Wohlford
"Oh, please honey, can we go? " Mel asked after viewing the pictures of 'White Oak View'. It had been an extremely stressful year for all of us. We had decided we indeed needed a vacation. We had read about the Raft & Rail Excursion by Wildwater Ltd, so therefore looked for accommodation close by. We were elated when one of our Internet inquiries was answered and learned about this phenomenal place, but never, ever, even in our wildest dreams, could we have possibly known what our vacation had in store for us.
We were so fortunate to have been a part of 'Family Frontiers'. Yes, dear reader we learned about the edible Indian Cucumber Root (Medeola virginiana) delicious ! The Umbrella Leaf (Diphylleia cymosa), We ate Watercress, (Cardamine rotundifolia) while standing in a pristine bubbling mountain stream. We were introduced to the lovely Fire Pink (Silene virginica) , Queen Anne's Lace (Daucus carota - wild carrot), and a rare red Salamander (Pseudotriton ruber ) wandering along our path.
